About this portal

Rising abrupt and solitary above the plains of Wyoming, the Tower is an immense monolith of volcanic rock columns climbing straight into the sky. For more than twenty Native nations it is sacred — Mateo Tepee, 'Bear Lodge' — and legend tells that its vertical grooves were made by the claws of a giant bear while children prayed upon the summit, lifted by the Great Spirit. The first National Monument of the United States, it is a portal of ascension: the stone tree that links the soil of the plains to the realm of the stars.
