About this portal
Ephesus is the ground where the Sacred Feminine crossed the ages without ever being extinguished. There once rose the Temple of Artemis — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with its 127 marble columns — the heart of the cult of the Great Goddess of fertility and the moon, heir to the Great Mother of Anatolia. Centuries later, on the same land, Christian tradition places the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi), on Nightingale Hill, where the Mother of Jesus is said to have lived her final days under the care of the apostle John. It was also at Ephesus that the Council of 431 proclaimed Mary as Theotokos, the God-bearer. From goddess to virgin, from pagan sanctuary to a place of ecumenical pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims, Ephesus holds the living memory of one same feminine flame that transfigures itself, yet never dies out.
