About this portal
In the heart of the Teutoburg Forest, five sandstone pillars erupt from the earth like stone fingers pointing to the sky. The Externsteine are an ancient sanctuary: atop one of them, a carved chamber holds a circular window aligned to the summer solstice sunrise and the moon’s extreme standstill. Pagans, druids, and Christians all left their marks there. It is a portal of the Northern oracle: where rock became temple and the solstice light still finds, on time, the window opened in stone.
