About this portal
From the midst of the quicksands of the Norman bay, Mont-Saint-Michel rises like a sacred mountain made by human hands: a Gothic abbey stacked upon a pyramidal island, crowned by the golden statue of Saint Michael brandishing his sword. According to legend, the archangel appeared to bishop Aubert in 708 and commanded the sanctuary be built. Encircled by the fastest tides in Europe, the mount became one of the greatest pilgrimage centres of the medieval West — the central jewel of the ‘Sword of Light’ linking the sanctuaries of Saint Michael from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
