About this portal
High on the Gargano promontory, the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel guards the oldest grotto consecrated to Saint Michael in all the West. Tradition holds that the archangel himself appeared there around the year 490, leaving his mark upon the rock and declaring the cave a place of heaven on earth — ‘where the stones forgive sins’. It was the model for all the sanctuaries of Saint Michael that followed, from Mont-Saint-Michel to Skellig Michael. The eastern marker of the ‘Sword of Light’ in Europe, the grotto-sanctuary with its octagonal bell tower has drawn pilgrims for over fifteen centuries.
