About this portal
Perched on the summit of Monte Pirchiriano, at the gateway to the Alps, the Sacra di San Michele dominates the Val di Susa like a fortress suspended between earth and sky. Founded around the year 1000 and dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, the Benedictine abbey is the geographical midpoint of the line of Saint Michael monasteries stretching from Mont-Saint-Michel in France to Monte Sant’Angelo in Apulia. Its dark stone walls, the long ‘Stairway of the Dead’ and the view over the Alps make it one of Europe’s most imposing sanctuaries — an eternal symbol of Italy and the inspiration for ‘The Name of the Rose’.
