About this portal

On the Cornish coast, a tidal island crowned by a castle-monastery rises from the waters: St Michael’s Mount. At low tide an ancient stone causeway joins it to the mainland; at high tide the sea isolates it like a world apart. Tradition holds that Saint Michael appeared to local fishermen atop the crag in the year 495, and ever since the mount has been dedicated to the archangel. It is the island twin of the French Mont-Saint-Michel and one of the great markers of the legendary St Michael’s Line that cuts across England from Cornwall to Norfolk, following the Beltane sunrise.
