This flat-topped tepui, over 2 billion years old, is one of the oldest geological formations on the planet. Mount Roraima, a 1.8-billion-year-old tepui on the Venezuela-Brazil-Guyana tri-border region, is considered sacred by the Pemon and Kapon peoples. According to their mythology, the mountain is the stump of the Tree of Life, felled by Makunaima, giving rise to a great flood. Its summit shelters a unique ecosystem with endemic species, whose ancestry has been dated by science to 5.3 million years ago.
