The bluestones of Stonehenge came from the Preseli Hills in Wales, nearly 250 km away. Research from the Royal College of Art showed that many are “sonorous stones” (lithophones): when struck, they sound like a bell or gong. There is even a village there called Maenclochog — “ringing stones.” That they sound is a measured fact; whether they were chosen for their sound is the most beautiful hypothesis.
