INAH archaeologists discovered an 8,000-year-old human skeleton in a submerged cenote near Tulum, indicating an organized funerary practice predating Maya civilization. This is the 11th prehistoric burial found in the region, highlighting the importance of these sites. Later, the Maya regarded cenotes as sacred portals to Xibalba, the underworld in their worldview.
