About this portal
A mountain-peninsula thrust into the Aegean Sea, Mount Athos is the Holy Mountain of Orthodox Christianity — a monastic state where time has stood still. Twenty monasteries clinging to the cliffs have guarded, for more than a thousand years, a life of unbroken prayer; no woman may enter, and the solitary summit points to the sky like a finger of stone. Dedicated since antiquity to light — first to Zeus, then to the Mother of God — Athos is a portal of contemplation: where silence became discipline and the whole mountain turned into living prayer.
