About this portal

Bodh Gaya is the holiest place in Buddhism — the site where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment (bodhi) beneath the Bodhi Tree, becoming the Buddha. The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, raises its tower of about 50 meters beside a direct descendant of the original tree and marks the Vajrasana, the 'Diamond Throne' installed by Emperor Ashoka. It is the foremost of the four great pilgrimage sites linked to the life of the Buddha and attracts pilgrims and meditators from across Asia.
