About this portal

Lalibela, in the mountains of Ethiopia, is home to eleven medieval churches carved directly into volcanic rock, conceived by King Lalibela as a 'New Jerusalem.' Hewn from the top down out of single blocks of stone, they are one of the wonders of humanity's sacred engineering and remain a living center of faith for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. During festivals such as Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) and Timkat, crowds of pilgrims dressed in white fill the trenches and tunnels that connect the temples. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and radiates an unbroken ancestral devotion.

Em Lalibela, a festa integra cânticos litúrgicos ancestrais, a queima de tochas (chibo), cantos tradicionais Hoya Hoye por jovens e a distribuição do pão especial mulmul dabo. Ashendye 2026: Festival Sagrado das Mulheres nas Igrejas de Lalibela

Em 23 e 24 de agosto de 2026, as ruas de Lalibela se transformam com o Festival Ashendye — celebração anual da Igreja Ortodoxa Etíope que marca o fim do jejum de duas semanas do Filseta em honra à Virgem Maria. Jovens mulheres vestem trajes tradicionais adornados com folhas de ashenda amarradas à cintura, imitando as asas dos anjos, e dançam e cantam ao redor das 11 igrejas monolíticas escavadas na rocha vulcânica. O festival é um rito de passagem milenar que celebra alegria, liberdade e salvação, enraizado na cosmovisão ortodoxa etíope.
